L'Avenir is a design proposal for East Village Kansas prepared by team of five interdisciplinary students of Iowa State University for Urban Land Institute student design competition, 2021. Me and my team members, Calise Gritter- Department of Architecture , Matthew Bong- Department of Architecture, Seyedehmaryam Maddahzad- Landscape Architecure, Aarthi Saravanakumar- Department of Architecture were involved in preparing this proposal.

Our proposal includes a design of a community, L'Avenir which is a product of partnership between civic leaders, real estate developers, designer and community organisation. Grounded on the principle of community engagement diverse economic growth and environmental innovation, L'Avenir symbolizes the future of intentional development by honoring the past while looking forward to the future.
I was involved in the transportation intervention and planning of the proposed conceptual design. The phase one of the proposal include extending of existing streetcar network to the East Village to encourage transportation oriented development.
The design concept is derived from three main drivers: Community, Environment and Economy. The figure below shows the process of evolution of design theme and intention.

Master Plan:

Transportation connection and accessibility is one of the main factor for development of area. The design proposal focuses on providing multi-modal transportation facility and connects the area tot he main street. This will develop the urban vitality of the area and encourages economic development. The extension of streetcar provides opportunity to connect the neglected East Village to the rest part of the city which encourages the flourishing of the area in terms of development of community and business.
The multi modal transport system and access to public transportation system creates inclusive environment that will result in mixed development of the East Village.
